The National Identification Authority boss, Professor Ken Attafuah, has revealed that the Ecowas Identity Card, popularly known as the Ghana Card could become the passport with which Ghanaians can travel to Europe after Ghana signs a protocol with the European Union.

Speaking to Bola Ray on Starr Chat, Professor Attafuah the card is necessary for national development.

He also applauded former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama for urging Ghanaians to register for the card.

He indicated that, the Ghana Card marks the first in the world.

“This instant card we are issuing is the first of its kind in any part of the world. You get a passport on it that can make you travel anywhere in West Africa. And when Ghana signs the protocol with the EU you will be able to travel with the Ghana card anywhere in Europe,” he said.

According to him, the President is keenly following the progress of the card issuance to ensure that the initiative is carried out successfully.

“I met him last week and I have met him this week over it. He wants to know what is happening, what challenges we are facing and why the Ghanaian people are stressing and I feel the pain too but we will deliver on this project”, he added.

The registration and issuance of the Ghana Card is still ongoing at some areas in Accra.

To register, individuals are expected to either have a passport or a birth certificate to begin the process.
